Durable Solutions

According to the International Legal Framework, the refugee situation is said to be temporary. This means that the events that contributed to the displacement of refugees may fade away in the short or long run, allowing refugees to return to their country of origin.

However, if this is not the case, refugees have sought to consider settling in another country and acquiring a new nationality.

The first of these solutions is “voluntary repatriation” in the country of origin. This signifies that the refugee status has been terminated thus the individual's reintegration into his or her own Nation-State. This solution is put forward by DRS and UNHCR as the best for the refugee solution.

When voluntary repatriation is not possible, the host country offers the option of "local integration," by remaining as a refugee and enjoying the host country's rights and services.

The third solution is resettlement in a third country to access citizenship in the third country. It is regarded as a last resort alternative when the other two have failed and also as a means of burden-sharing of refugees worldwide.
