Entitlement to documentation is a right under the Refugee Act No. 10 of 2021 Section 28(6) that every refugee and every asylum seeker within Kenya shall be entitled to the rights and be subject— A refugee and an asylum seeker shall have the right to identification and civil registration documents and such documents shall be sufficient to identify a refugee or an asylum seeker for the purposes of access to rights and services under this Act and any other applicable law.
Different kinds of documentation gazetted by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Interior and National Administration are;
- Refugee Identity Card
- Asylum Seeker Pass
- Conventional Travel Document (CTD)
- Movement Pass
- Letter of Recognition
Camp Visit Permit .
Refugee designated areas/camps in Kenya are protected zones where refugees reside under government protection. To ensure their security, all visitors must undergo a vetting process conducted by the Department of Refugee Services (DRS) in Nairobi before visiting these areas. Access is granted only with authorization issued by the Commissioner for Refugee Affairs, in accordance with Sections 8(r) and 33 of the Refugee Act No. 10 of 2021. Unauthorized visits are subject to arrest and prosecution.
